Caring for your
concrete.
Simple, no-nonsense upkeep tips to protect your investment and keep your concrete looking great for decades.
Seal it every 2–3 years
A quality sealer is the single best thing you can do for your concrete. It blocks water, road salt and stains, and keeps color from fading. Reseal exterior surfaces every two to three years, or when water stops beading on the surface.
Keep salt off in winter
Deicing salts are hard on concrete, especially in the first winter. Use sand for traction where you can, shovel promptly, and rinse off salt residue in spring before sealing.
Rinse and sweep regularly
Dirt, leaves and organic debris trap moisture and can stain. A periodic sweep and hose-down — or a yearly power wash — goes a long way toward keeping the surface looking new.
Address cracks early
Hairline cracks are normal, but open cracks let water in, which freezes and widens them. Fill small cracks with a flexible concrete sealant before winter to stop the cycle.
Avoid metal scraping
When clearing snow, use a plastic-edged shovel or a blade with a rubber guard. Metal edges can scratch sealer and chip decorative finishes.
Give new concrete time
Fresh concrete keeps curing for weeks. Keep heavy vehicles off a new driveway for the time we recommend, and wait before applying the first sealer coat.
